I thought I would take some time out to talk about themes in art that interest me. A couple of these things, you'll notice, have never shown up in my own work, oftentimes because I don't feel I can do them justice.

1) Mythical beings of immense power that are forced to adapt to life as ordinary people. I do this with Dracaena a lot; the idea that a mighty dragoness would ever find herself eating icecream or playing Pokemon or shopping at Hot Topic just tickles me.

2) Characters that take other forms. Practically ALL of my characters can turn into something else. This can be traced to my obsession with Transformers; ever since I became spoiled by them, I've just never been satisfied with characters (or toys for that matter) that DON'T transform.

3) Petrification (well, no surprises there). There are probably essays all over the place trying to explain the appeal of this theme, but even though I'm an enthusiast myself I don't really understand it. I guess it comes from the same family as bondage...?

4) Disintegration of living things. Some of my favorite pictures are images of characters that are shattering, cracking, or dissolving in some way. It makes me think of diseases that cause a person's mind or body to degrade over time. To me, those are some of the scariest diseases, more so than any sudden death. D:

5) Biomech. I like things that blur the line between living and artificial. Like H.R. Giger's work, or the Mirrodin world in Magic: the Gathering.

6) Good characters turning evil, preferably by force (mind control etc.) but also by choice. Somehow I just don't care as much when it goes the other way (an evil character turning good). Except if it's Dinobot.
